http://potsnap.ca/ https://www.facebook.com/PotSnap https://m.me/PotSnap https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/ottawa-pothole-reporting-fill-app-1.5073348 PotSnap is an Facebook Messenger based, automated pothole reporting tool. Potsnap is very simple to use. It only asks a few simple questions and then reports your pothole anonymously to the City of Ottawa. PotSnap is faster then any other means and hopes to be the tool of choice for Canada’s Pothole hunters. PotSnap is also a proof of concept of a first party tool, for the Universal Reporting System. It demonstrates the use of an independent API to service Endpoints with service requests, using the Open 311 framework provided by the City of Ottawa. The URT expands on the base provided by the City and provides richer feature set that focuses on reducing and eliminating common pain points for governance. As a parent, it was very complicated for me to figure out which EarlyON playgroup was happening on any given day. So I built a repository of all the EarlyON playgroups so that parents can simply visit the website and find out where the closest playgroups are happening when. You can filter by area, time of day, language and age range: https://claudielarouche.com/earlyon.html I used this as a datasource: https://ottawa.ca/en/family-and-social-services/childrens-services/earlyon

1 comment0Yany Siekabout 2 months agoThe Suspected Drug Overdose Deaths in Ottawa Tracking Tool/Dashboard
This dynamic, self-serve dashboard provides users with the ability to explore and analyze trends in suspected drug overdose deaths occurring in Ottawa. This is particularly important in light of the ongoing challenges our city (and many other Canadian cities) face. Link: https://lnkd.in/g6DbPgg2 It is live connected to the Suspected Drug Overdose Deaths in Ottawa dataset, refreshing automatically with the latest data every Tuesday. Built in Power BI, the tool is simple and easy to use with various analytical features that provide individuals of all data literacy levels with the ability to understand trends. I hope that the community, particularly organizations helping to fight the opioid crisis, find this analytical tool helpful. Feel free to contact me via linked in at Yany Siek or yanysasiek@gmail.com if you would like to share your thoughts.

KseniaEicover 4 years agoCreate more fenced-in dog parks
We would love to see more fenced-in dog parks in the city, particularly ones that are integrated in with parks (with walkways and trees/vegetation, rather than just a large, cleared out open area with mulch and/or dirt). One great opportunity in our neighbourhood is the park that is currently undergoing some renewal in the Kingsview Park area (just south of Vanier Parkway, near the Saint Patrick St bridge). Our dog cannot be let off-leash unless it is in a fenced-in area so more of these kinds of areas would be really great for other dog-owners like us!

Public Data should be open by default.
1 comment0Matthew Darwinover 4 years agoUse OpenStreetMap base layer
The OpenStreetMap community in Ottawa is very active and works to quickly include updates from open.ottawa.ca into the base map in a timely fashion. The old CKAN based portal uses OSM base map. The new open.ottawa.ca should also use OSM base map. In the ESRI platform, the city can customize which OSM elements appear on the map using vector tiles. https://www.esri.com/arcgis-blog/products/arcgis-living-atlas/mapping/new-osm-vector-basemap/

0 comment0gabesolomonabout 4 years agoAdd paving contractor info to street layer
Allow residents to see who paved their street, and when it was done. Looking up RFPs are difficult for the average person. Put the info on a map and residents can click on their street and see who paved it, and when it was last done.

Ideas are reviewed on a quarterly basis by City departments. Approved ideas are adding to the department’s annual open data release plan. If a dataset cannot be released, the rationale will be posted on Engage Ottawa.

Patrick Bickertonover 1 year agoRevenue per property (or equivalent)
The city collects taxes on all private properties in order to fund city services. While the aggregate municipal tax revenue is reported in the annual budgets, the breakdown of municipal tax levied by property (or related but less accurate information such as assessed land value, assessed building value etc) is not easily available at scale, even for previous tax years. Ideally, this information would be added to the Municipal Address Points Dataset. One potential use of this information is to compare the amount of tax levied per property to the size (area) of property to determine the financial productivity and health of the city.
3 comments8gmckenzieover 3 years agoPlease provide public URLs to commercial scooter share GBFS feeds
Given that these scooter companies (Lime, Bird, etc.) are operating on public infrastructure, I would like to see their GBFS (up-to-date available vehicle locations) made available in the same way that they are in both Calgary and Edmonton (e.g., https://data.calgary.ca/Transportation-Transit/Calgary-Bike-and-Scooter-Share/bwkw-h2bc). Thanks.

A directory of public bathrooms (not those "must be a paying customer" bathrooms) would make more-rural areas less perilous for those with relevant illnesses. Not exactly needed downtown.
