Get water wise – save lives

Did you know that every year, about 160 people drown in Ontario? Drowning is fast and silent, but every drowning death is preventable with water safety knowledge.

Here are 4 important water safety tips to prevent water-related injuries:
  1. Learn to swim. In Canada, learning how to swim is a life skill. The City of Ottawa offers swimming lessons for all ages and abilities.
  2. Have a swim buddy. Don’t go swimming alone! Always make sure you are with a friend or family member.
  3. Stay alert. When you are the designated water watcher you must always be alert and aware of the water. Avoid distractions which can take your focus away from the water.
  4. Layers of protection. Backyard pools with self-latching gates, life jackets, and close supervision of children are all layers of protection that help prevent drowning.

Become a lifeguard

We are hiring Aquatic Lifeguards and Instructors. If you’ve got the required certifications and are looking for an exciting job opportunity, mark your calendar and register in-person or over the phone at your local pool for a lifeguard skills screening session:
  • August 9, Brewer Pool 5 to 7 pm (arrive at 4:30 to check-in)
Want to know more about the Aquatics Lifeguard and Instructor screening sessions? Recreation Supervisor Martin Morissette is hosting a Facebook Live information session to answer all your questions. Tune in at 1 pm on August 2, or at 2 pm on our French Facebook page.
